Anyone can learn how to draw. There are no prerequisites for this course, except for the age requirement (6-adult). Although it is not required, we do recommend that students in this class have some previous understanding of basic drawing skills. Students who enroll in our Beginner Drawing Studio will be more than adequately prepared for this course. Regardless of experience level, anyone who has a desire to learn is welcome to join this beginner level course. There’s something for everyone to learn!

Five day course, 3 hours per day. Total 15 hours.
Monday – Friday, June 12-16
1:00pm – 4:00pm
Newquii Studios will provide all of the necessary supplies, to include pencil sets, charcoal sets, and sketchbooks for each student to use during class. Students will get to keep these supplies when the course is complete. As references, students in this portrait class will use mirrors, photographs, themselves, and each other.
If you wish, you may also choose to bring your own supplies in addition to those provided.
In the Figures and Faces 1 course,we’re going to take an in-depth look at people. We’ll learn the proportions of the human figure and the human face. We will also look at how those proportions change with age and gender. Working from photos and from real life observation, students in this course will learn how to draw people the way that they really look, instead of how we think they should look. From spotting details in skin texture to understanding how gravity makes clothes hang on the body, learning to see is the first step in learning to draw.
Come learn how light interacts with the world around us to make highlights and shadows, how the human eye perceives that light, how to measure proportions and angles (uh-oh, there goes Mr. New using math words again!), and how to change facial features to emphasize emotions or character traits. In the process, students will boost their vocabulary with words like: portrait, value, scale, proportion, construction, geometric shapes, organic shapes, and so much more!
If any of this sounds too complicated, trust that Mr. New will be with you every step of the way. And trust that drawing is a skill that anyone can learn. By the time you complete this class, you’ll be proficient in drawing black-and-white portraits, and you’ll be fully prepared for the following courses:
- Ultimate Color Theory (acrlic paints)
- Wide Open Spaces 1 (chalk pastels – grayscale and color)
- Figures and Faces 2 (chalk pastels – color)
- Wide Open Spaces 2 (acrylic paints – color)
